This paper summarizes the physical, chemical, environmental, and toxicological properties of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT). 2-MBT is used in the production of the antisapstain compound 2-(thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole (TCMTB), and is one of the its breakdown products. 2-MBT is also used in teh rubber industry as an accelerant in the vulcanizing process, and as an antioxidant, and anticorrosion agent, and a textile preservative.
