In this study, the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured in the adipose tissue of 42 British Columbians scheduled for elective abdominal surgery in three tertiary care hospitals in the Vancouver area. The study sample was weighted to the age and sex distribution of the population. The specific aims of this study were to compare the levels of PCDDs/PCDFs in the adipose tissue of British Columbians with those residents of the rest of Canada and with exposed and unexposed populations reported in the international literature; and to determine whether sources of exposure and other risk factors cited in the scientific literature (including age, sex, area of residence, occupation, diet, and weight) were related to the levels of PCDDs/PCDFs in the sample of B.C. residents.
