Finlay-Omineca Area Lower Finlay Sub-basin Water Quality Assessment Truelson, R.L.

Abstract: This report reviews existing water quality data for the Lower Finlay sub-basin in the Finlay-Omineca area. Information was available for Haworth, Chesterfield, and Quentin Lakes in Kwadacha Park, the lower Finlay River below Ware, and its main tributaries (Paul River, Akie River, and Del Creek). The sub-basin is sparsely populated and undeveloped at present. Sizable mineral and timber development plans have been scheduled to commence in the near future, although delays can be expected due to the current economic slow-down. The main issues relating to water quality in the Lower Finlay Sub-basin are the naturally high mercury content in some fish and the potential for increases in heavy metals and other substances as a result of proposed industrial development. Extensive logging activity and Cyprus Anvil's Cirque project, a proposed lead-zinc mine on the Paul River are specific concerns. There are no licensed water withdrawals or permitted waste discharges in the sub-basin at present.
