2004

Abstract: This document provides guidelines intended to help local governments, land-use managers and approving officers develop and implement land-use management plans and make subdivision approval decisions for flood hazard areas. The goals of the provincial “Flood Hazard Area Land Use Management Guidelines” are to reduce or prevent injury, human trauma and loss of life, and to minimize property damage during flooding events. Experience has shown that regulating land development to keep people out of harm’s way is the most practical and cost effective way of achieving these goals. The guidelines are based on the policies and procedures established and refined over the life of the provincial flood hazard management program. These guidelines have been prepared pursuant to section 2 of the EnvironmentManagement Act and must be considered by local governments in making bylaws under section 910 of the Local Government Act.
