Environment Canada utilized a hieratchical data base system on a main frame computer to store and manage data on pollutant discharges in Canada. The data base system is called the Residual Discharge Inventory System, which is frequently referred to by the acronym RDIS. RDIS is capable of storing and reporting data on air emissions, effluent discarges to receiving waters and solid waste disposal to the land.
