Author

Abstract
Using survey data obtained on Rocky Mountain Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) and Columbian Black-tailed deer (O.h.columbianus) within the Fraser Timber Supply Area (TSA), the author provides detailed analysis and recommendations on the minimum habitat necessary for the winter survival of deer in this management plan. Of 335 DMUs (Deer Management Units) within the Anderson, Nahatlatch, Ainslie, Manning, Yale, Silverhope, East Hanison, Coquihalla, and Chilliwack regions, 8906 ha were designated 'Classic' DMU-- area with topography and vegetation sufficient to sustain deer through severe winter conditions. The 'Classic' is the habitat unit with the least opportunity for forest development, and thus has the greatest potential to impact the timber supply; it represents approximately 59.4% (8,906 ha/15,000 ha) of the area within the Timber Harvesting Land Base (THLB) considered unavailable for forest development in the region.
