Abstract
The objective of the subject study was to determine whether unacceptable algal growth in the Cheakamus River would be produced by elevated dissolved ortho phosphorus levels in the Whistler Sewage Treatment Plant discharge. The sewage outfall enters the Upper Cheakamus River, part of which forms the Lower Cheakamus headwaters as it passes through the daisy lake dam. The majority of the flow diverts from the lake into the Squamish River by way of a powerhouse tunnel and tailrace. During the 1987 study, phosphorus reduction at the treatment plant was eliminated, so that future (worst case) phosphorus loading conditions could be approximated. From July to September, 1987, weekly water chemistry and periphyton samples were collected in the Cheakamus and - on a reduced basis - Squamish River systems.
