Title
Foliar nutrients of lodgepole pine growing amid naturally occurring Sitka Alder in the central interior of British Columbia

Abstract
On areas under prescription, Sitka alder (Alnus viridus spp. sinuata) can prevent free growing declarations. This shrub is beneficial as a nitrogen fixer, yet still acts as a 'competitor' according to the Establishment to Free Growing Guidebook. The silviculture surveyor needs objective criteria to assess free growing status on alder / conifer complexes. Growth differences on lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) growing with and without Sitka alder on upland Cariboo sites will be compared. An objective methodology for assessing the impact of Sitka alder on lodgepole pine will then be generated, and recommendations to improve the guidebook will be made. Christine Lohr.
