Abstract
Fish habitat in the Sproat Lake watershed was severely impacted by a number of landslides that occurred on or after the November 15, 2006 storm event. Fish and fish habitat in an un-named tributary to Sterling Arm, Sproat Lake was one of the most severely impacted areas. Located at Stirling Mainline 7km the upper limit of fish use was 500 m upstream of the creek mouth (Wright 2000). The landslide buried the entire fish bearing portion of the stream. It is likely all juvenile fish (coho and cutthroat), spawning sockeye and coho and incubating eggs were destroyed by the slide. The greatest impact to fish production would have been to the beach-spawning habitat surrounding the creek delta. Williams (2006), Askin (2007), and Campbell and Millard (2007), inspected the slide and concluded that more material is available and will likely be transported downstream in the future. M.C. Wright and Associates and Integrated Watersheds Ltd. were contracted in 2006/2007 to develop a prescription outlining the design and procedures to construct a sediment containment structure at the 7km Stirling mainline landslide. The prescription outlined the need to create a large catch basin to trap and store sediment and debris transported in the future. The project received approval from the Land Based Investment Program of the Forest Investment Account (FIA) to conduct prescribed work in January 2007. Special permission was granted from Fisheries and Oceans to perform the works outside the Fisheries Window. On March 15, 2007 restoration works commenced. To date 50% of the works are complete. An updated prescription will be completed outlining what is required to complete the existing project and what additional works will be required downstream of the catch basin. submitted by M. C.
