Abstract
Summary of 2006 update: The 2006 structural monitoring focused on the 5-year remeasurements of 23 operational variable retention (VR) blocks that had first been monitored shortly after harvest in 2001. Additional 5-year remeasurements were done in 8 mature stands. Full structure monitoring was also completed for 2 VRAM experimental sites and the initial post-harvest tree and snag survey was completed in one new VRAM site. The 2006 results were incorporated into the overall habitat structure database, analyses that were affected by the new data were re-run, and the appropriate sections of the complete cumulative report on habitat structure monitoring were updated. This document contains only the sections updated in 2006; the full cumulative report on habitat structure monitoring from 1999-2006 is available from Western Forest Products. The 2006 monitoring results allowed the following improvements: 1) The comparison of 5-year changes in habitat structures was updated with the larger sample sizes, and the addition of information from the coastal western hemlock (CWHwh) subzone, and for mature forest. The mature forest remeasurements, in addition to supplying benchmark information on rates of changes in natural ecosystems, allowed some assessment of how much changes in field crews and methods between years might affect results. 2) The analysis of edge effects 5 years after harvest was updated with the increased sample size. 3) The extensive analysis of changes in individually tagged trees and snags was re-conducted with sample sizes doubled for at least some stem types. This analysis is one of the main sources of information on mortality, decay and fall rates for trees and snags on the coast, which are a critical part of projecting the long-term consequences of current management options. 4) A section was added summarizing the habitat structures in the different treatment units at the 2 VRAM sites. These will help researchers monitoring organisms at the sites interpret their results. Conclusions about effects of the experimental treatments on habitat structures will have to wait until monitoring is completed at the replicate sites. by David Huggard.
