Abstract
Since the number of hectares impacted by Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) in BC is very large, some stands will not be salvage-logged and planted following beetle attack. Hence, the accurate projection of future timber production in MPB-affected stands will depend on our ability to estimate natural regeneration following MPB disturbances. This project targets critical areas of uncertainty associated with the prediction of natural regeneration following MPB attack in non-salvaged stands. As part of the Mountain Pine Beetle Initiative (MPBI), Natural Resources Canada is conducting an extensive study to establish baseline information on the economic and ecological characteristics of MBP-affected stands in several biogeoclimatic (BEC) regions of BC. However, data on natural regeneration in MPB-affected stands are not being collected as part of that study. Some regeneration data are available from a previous study by Natural Resources Canada (see description in Beukema and Robinson 2004), and are presently being used by our project team in a study funded by Natural Resources Canada. However, these data are limited, both in the amount and range of conditions represented. Additional data, and analyses of these data, are needed to provide better estimates of regeneration following MPB attack. The focus of this study is to gather necessary data and to estimate the amount of natural regeneration that has occurred in stands that have not been salvage-logged. These estimates can then be used in PrognosisBC and other growth and yield models to project future stand development in MPB-affected stands.
