Global Habitat Comments: Terrestrial in bogs or other wet habitats in coastal areas and also at high elevations (above 3000 m) in the Himalayan region (Thiers 1993). Pleurozia purpurea grows in blanket bog, wet heath, montane turf, scree and peat-covered rock ledges (Smith, 1990).

Global Range Comment: Known from northern Asia (Bhutan, India, Nepal), North America (British Columbia), Europe (Britain, Denmark, Norway), and the West Indies (Guadeloupe); Ireland, Japan, Sikkim, Alaska (Thiers 1993).

According to Smith (1990), Pleurozia purpurea is common in western Scotland and western Ireland, Norway, Faroes, Jan Meyen Island, Himalayas, Alaska, Guadeloupe, Hawaii. Absent from northern England and northwestern Wales.
