Half-moon Hairstreak Inventory in the Southern Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, 2009 - FINAL
2009
A BC Conservation Corps crew was tasked with conducting inventories of Half-moon Hairstreaks within the Southern Okanagan in 2009 to identify sites for habitat protection. A crew of two conducted presence/not detected surveys from June 12th - June 29th, during the adult Half-moon Hairstreak flight period. Four areas were surveyed over 4 days for a total search effort of 42 hectares and 31hrs 38min. This resulted in 182 adult Half-moon Hairstreak detections. These surveys reconfirmed presence of this species at several previously known sites and extended the known area of occupancy. Given the short flight period of this species and factors that influence surveys, such as weather conditions, future inventory attempts would benefit from more surveyors to cover larger areas at once.

Immaculate Green Hairstreak Inventory in the South Okanagan and Boundary Region, British Columbia, 2009 - FINAL
2009
A BC Conservation Corps crew conducted presence/not detected surveys for this species in the South Okanagan and Boundary regions between May 21 and June 4, 2009. Ten sites were surveyed over eight days, for a total of 78 hectares searched and a total search effort time of 38 hours and 20 minutes. Ten Immaculate Green Hairstreaks were observed; all occurred on hilltops or knolls within sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) - bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) habitats with nectar and host plants (Eriogonum spp., Lupinus spp. and Erigeron spp.).
The 2009 surveys helped to further define the presence of Immaculate Green Hairstreaks in the Okanagan and Boundary areas. More thorough searches (extending further north, and even further south) are needed to determine the full extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of this species and help meet the Conservation Framework priorities.

Mormon Fritallary Inventory in the Okanagan and Boundary Regions of Southern British Columbia, 2009
2009
Surveys began about 2 weeks after the first observation date, reported by Dennis St. John on July 21, to ensure reasonable delectability. Eighty (80) search stations were
inventoried for S. m. erinna during 9 field days between August 5 and 26, 2009. One or more S. m. erinna was detected at nine (9) of eighty stations. Detailed counts were not made at each station, since the purpose of the inventory was to identify as many locations as possible. The elevation range of detections was approximately 1030m to 1530m
Above Sea Level. Before this survey, three (3) S. m. erinna locations were known for the Anarchist Mountain area. This survey identified 3 additional locations.

Nuttall's Buckmoth and Ground Mantid Searches in the South Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, 2009
2009
The Nuttall's Buckmoth (Hemileuca nuttalli) and Ground Mantid (Litaneutria minor) are two invertebrate species listed for inventory under the BC Conservation Framework (2009). The Nuttall's Buckmoth is listed as a mid priority species on The COSEWIC Candidate List (COSEWIC 2009). The Ground Mantid may be recommended as a COSEWIC candidate (Rob Cannings, COSEWIC Arthropod subcommittee, pers. comm.). These species were included in a list of target species for the BC Conservation Corps grassland species inventory crew. The crew spent 4 days surveying antelope-brush habitats within the Southern Okanagan between August 24th and September 1st 2009. These searches did not result in any detection of either target species. This preliminary attempt to address the lack of data for these invertebrate species will help inform future inventory efforts.

Nuttall's Cottontail Pellet Surveys in the Southern Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, 2009
2009
In 2009, a 2 person BC Conservation Corps crew conducted multi-species presence/not detected inventories in the south Okanagan. During this time surveyors placed 95 Nuttall's Cottontail pellet search stations on 18 selected parcels of vacant Crown land, provincial parks and protected areas and privately protected land owned by the Nature Trust of BC (TNT). Seventy-eight Nuttall's Cottontail pellet groups were recorded at ten sites. These surveys provided basic presence/not detected information for a lower priority species like the Nuttall's Cottontail.

Okanagan Grassland Species Inventory - Multi-species Report
2009
The south Okanagan grasslands are home to several Red or Blue listed species. During the 2009 field season a BC Conservation Corps crew of two conducted presence/not-detected surveys under a multi-species approach. The crew surveyed for multiple species, across different taxa, while in the field. Target species included, at-risk butterflies (Immaculate Green Hairstreak, Half-moon Hairstreak, Sonora Skipper, Hoffman's Checkerspot and Mormon Fritillary, erinna subspecies), Tiger Beetles, Nuttall's Cottontail, Efferia robber flies, Grasshopper Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Ground Mantid and Nuttall's Buckmoth. Species specific results and discussions can be obtained in individual species reports housed in the Ministry of Environment's Wildlife Species Inventory database.
This multi-species inventory was a new approach to addressing the information gap for many of these species in the south Okanagan. This report discusses methods and key findings that arose during the process. Although this approach presents unique challenges it can be particularly useful for areas such as the southern Okanagan region which supports a high number of species at risk. This report can be used to inform future multi-species initiatives.

Opportunistic Efferia n. species inventory in the South Okanagan, 2009
2009
Okanagan Efferia has not yet been officially described or named, but is on the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada's (COSEWIC) Candidate List, where it is referred to as Efferia n. sp. This species is known only from the Okanagan and Thompson valleys, BC, Canada, where it occurs in bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) and antelope-brush (Purshia tridentata) habitats. In 2009, the BC Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with the BC Conservation Corps (BCCC) and the BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF), began a multi-species inventory initiative to increase the amount of inventory data for several species in the Okanagan. BCCC crew members were trained to identify robber flies and searched for Efferia n. sp. while conducting multi-species surveys in antelope-brush habitats. This was done on five different parcels of antelope-brush habitat during the species' flight period of May and early June. Nine Efferia n. sp. were detected during the field training day; no other Efferia n. sp. were observed in 2009.

Sonora Skipper and Hoffman's Checkerspot Inventory in the Similkameen Drainage of Southern British Columbia, 2009
2009
In 2009, the BC Conservation Corps grassland species crew conducted inventories for these butterflies in the Similkameen drainage. The crew was trained by a local lepidopterist and conducted surveys in Manning Provincial Park and the Ashnola River area. Wandering transects were used to survey for species and their associated habitat. This resulted in the detection of one individual of each species. Voucher specimens were collected and species were identified based on descriptions in Guppy and Shepard (2000) to the best of surveyors' abilities; identification should be verified by an expert familiar with these species. These detections reconfirmed the presence of Hoffman's Checkerspot and Sonora Skipper in Manning Park. Few detections exist for these species in British Columbia. Additional inventory efforts are needed to better determine their distribution and associated habitat.

Tiger beetle inventory in the South Okanagan, British Columbia, 2009
2009
In 2009, the BC Conservation Corps crew, with
guidance and support from the BC Ministry of Environment, conducted multi-species
surveys in the Okanagan grasslands. These three species of tiger beetles were included in
the surveys. Surveyors conducted tiger beetle inventories in May and again in September
during the adult tiger beetle activity periods. Tiger beetles were also searched for,
casually, during the multi-species surveys throughout the field season. The September
surveys proved most effective and over 50 tiger beetles were observed at nine sites in the
south Okanagan. Surveyors covered 84.2km while targeting tiger beetles in September.
No Dark Saltflat Tiger Beetles were encountered. One Badlands Tiger Beetle and twentyone
Sagebrush Tiger Beetles were recorded.
