Mackenzie Nature Observatory 2013 Annual Birding Report  2013  Over the season we monitored approximately 16,000 individual birds of 140 species. Mugaha Marsh continues to be an important location for many sorts of avian study. I encourage the reader to look at the observations note enclosed after the banding data in this report. This will provide a more encompassing view of the nature of this project. Our 2013 banding effort produced 3602 individuals of 60 species. The total number is much higher than the station average of 2677 with the species makeup equalling that of previous years. We reprocessed 291 individuals previously banded this season of 33 species and were encouraged by 40 birds of 14 species returning to the station from previous years. Notable was an American Redstart initially banded as an adult at the station in 2007 and 2 Clay-coloured Sparrows, one caught in 2011, the other in 2012. These two sparrow returns are remarkable in that there were only 7 of this species captured over the entire season. The tropical and fine weather allowed us to open our nets for 90% of our capacity. The capture rate per net hour is an impressive .82 birds. On an average daily basis 53.5 birds were processed. The first day of the season, July 19, offered our first 'over one hundred' day with 107 captured of 21 species. In addition, there were 3 other of these days, notably; August 11, 157 individuals of 29 species, August 13, 158 captured of 27 species and September 9 with 110 handled of 17 species.  wsi_4328_rpt_2013.pdf (3.9 MB)
Mackenzie Nature Observatory Report 2014  2014  We had 4596 net-hours and a grand total of 3099 birds banded, of 60species, giving us 0.67 birds per net-hour. Mackenzie Nature Observatory Mugaha Marsh Banding Station 2019 Annual Birding Report  2019  In 2019 we banded 3047 individuals of 62 species, which was above the 1995-2018 average of 2815. This brought our total birds banded to 70,629 for Birds Banded in Standard Banding at Mugaha Marsh. Mackenzie Nature Observatory Mugaha Marsh Banding Station 2021 Annual Birding Report  2021  Mackenzie Nature Observatory has operated a fall migration bird banding station at Mugaha Marsh each year since 1995, with the exception of 2020 when the station did not operate due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, standard banding occurred between July 19 and September 23. 2021 was an average year, with a total of 2605 birds banded in Standard Banding of 52 species (see Appendix 1), and 116 birds of 4 species in Non-Standard Banding. Mackenzie Nature Observatory Mugaha Marsh Banding Station 2022 Annual Birding Report  2022  Mackenzie Nature Observatory has operated a fall migration bird banding station at Mugaha Marsh each year since 1995, with the exception of 2020 where the station did not operate due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022, standard banding occurred between July 19 and September 23 (67 days). 2022 was a slower than average year, with a total of 2350 birds banded, of 61 species (see Appendix 1). The average across all years and species from 1995 - 2021 is 2816 birds of 60 species (see Appendix 2). Mackenzie Nature Observatory Mugaha Marsh Banding Station - 2023 Annual Report PEA-F24-W-3943-DCA  2023  Mackenzie Nature Observatory started banding passerines at Mugaha Marsh in 1994. Since then, over 80,000 birds have been banded. In 2023, 2799 birds of 62 species were banded during the Standard Banding period of July 19 to September 23. The average catch rate was 0.6157 birds/net hour (average 0.6633). The top six species were Ruby-crowned Kinglet (334), Swainson's Thrush (273), American Redstart (256), Golden-crowned Kinglet (213), Dark-eyed Junco (171), and Wilson's Warbler (147). Noteworthy species were the first ever Broad-winged Hawk banded in the history of the station, the second ever Mourning Warbler, the sixth ever Cape May Warbler, and the fifth ever Rose-breasted Grosbeak. All these species are considered "eastern species" as they are common east of the Rocky Mountains. Mackenzie Nature Observatory Mugaha Marsh Banding Station, 2024 Annual Report - PEA-F25-W-4133-DCA  2025  The Mackenzie Nature Observatory (MNO) completed its 29th year of bird migration monitoring at Mugaha Marsh in Mackenzie, British Columbia, to assist in the understanding of bird demographics and population trends. The program was funded by the BC Hydro Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) for meeting the Community Engagement objectives under the FWCP Peace River Cross-Ecosystem Action Plan by maintaining and improving relationships with Indigenous Nations and local stakeholders who support conservation projects in the Peace Region. A total of 16 passerine mist nests were in operation during the standard banding period July 19 - September 23, weather permitting, including 12 standard nets and four non-standard nets installed in previously decommissioned net lanes as an experiment. Nonstandardized banding was conducted September 24 - 30 as a pilot project to determine the feasibility of extending the season long-term. Standardized Northern Saw-whet Owl monitoring was also implemented for the first time in 2024 using 10 nets. A one hour, one kilometre census was conducted each day, regardless of weather conditions. A total of 2,116 birds of 58 species were banded during the standard banding period, which was low compared to previous years of operation, even when birds per net hour (0.51) are considered.  wsi_4328_rpt_2024.pdf (13.1 MB)
