Between July 17 and August 16 1989 Fisheries Branch personnel attended the Skeena River test (gillnet) fishery vessel which operated 6km upstream of the Skeena River estuary. One hundred and thirteen steelhead trout were captured of which 55 were dead when landed, 49 were radio tagged and 9 were anchor tagged. None of the anchor tagged fish were recaptured. Among 49 fish radio tagged, 7 were relocated by a stationary radio receiver 98km upstream of the tagging site. These seven fish had an average migration rate of 9km per day, less than that of seine caught fish for the same section of the Skeena river (10.4km per day). One radio tagged fish was caught and killed in a native net fishery while another 3 were found dead near the original tagging site. the survival of steelhead released from gillnets is questioned.
