As part of ongoing studies, the following report describes a steelhead tagging project carried out on Pallant Creek during the winter of 1990-91. Similar studies were conducted during the winters of 1981-82, 1984-84 and each successive winter thereafter. This project is aimed at documenting long term steelhead populations changes and establishing Pallant Creek as a steelhead index stream for the Queen Charlotte Islands. Continued commitment by the BCSS (Queen Charlotte Island Chapter) and the DFO (Pallant Creek Hatchery staff) to this project, combined with the small size and accessibility of the stream, make Pallant Creek a favourable location for this type of study. As in previous years, the objectives of the 1990-91 Pallant Creek steelhead tagging study were to describe steelhead run timing and movement, to describe life history characteristics and to estimate population size.
