The Slocan River is one of the larger rivers in the West Kootenays. In the 1960s, it supported
an excellent recreational fishery for large rainbow trout. This fishery declined drastically in the mid-1970s and trout numbers have remained low since then, in spite of experimental stocking programs and closure of the river to angling since 1994
