Fish salvage was conducted at multiple stranding sites along Highway 16 West, parallel to the Skeena river. The works occurred from April 19 to October 15, 2021, using Gee minnow traps as the primary method. The work was carried out by Kitsumkalum technicians and Westland Resources Ltd. employees.

In 2017 and 2018, the CN/Hwy 16 corridor from Terrace to Prince Rupert was assessed by the Kitsumkalum Band for fish passage issues through Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI) funding. CN Rail and Highway 16 run parallel to the Skeena river. Juvenile salmonids are able maneuver their way through spaces in the rail and highway grades, rearing in isolated waterbodies located on the other side. As the juvenile salmonids rear in these waterbodies, they increase in size and are unable to retreat into the mainstem, leaving them susceptible to stranding in the ephemeral pools. The stranding leads to the inability of the salmonids to complete their life cycle, thus negatively impacting fish populations in the Skeena watershed. This year, the Kitsumkalum Band received funding from the Indigenous Habitat Participation Program (IHPP) and the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) to conduct fish salvage at the sites. 12 of the 16 sites identified in the ESI document were salvaged by the Kitsumkalum Wildlife and Fisheries Operations Department, and Westland Resources Ltd.
