A desktop study to identify stream reaches within the Oyster River and Black Creek watersheds where there is a likelihood of hydraulic connection with underlying aquifers such that groundwater extraction from water wells could potentially reduce streamflow.

Author:  Tim Sivak and Mike Wei

Date Published:  May 2023

Report ID:  61385

Audience:  Government and Public

A desktop GIS-based study was conducted to develop a conceptual understanding of the main aquifers within the Oyster River and Black Creek watersheds on the east-coast of Vancouver Island and to assess how and where hydraulic connection to the Oyster River and Black Creek (and their tributary streams) likely occurs. This understanding was then applied to delineate preliminary Groundwater Management Areas (GWMAs) within the watersheds to allow any streamflow depletion impacts from well pumping to be managed in sub-areas related to key stream reaches.
