FIsh Salvage stranded fish in isolated waterbodies along Hwy 16 of the Skeena River.

Author:  Westland Resources Ltd.

Date Published:  Jan 2024

Report ID:  62913

Audience:  Government and Public

Due to ongoing stranding of fish along this corridor, we require a licence renewal. Seasonal flooding and drought are continuing to cause stranding of juvenile salmonids in isolated waterbodies, where they rear and can no longer access the Skeena River to complete their lifecycle. We wish to continue salvaging efforts in unison with seasonal flooding and drought to optimize the amount of fish salvaged. Working on behalf of the Kitsumkalum Band, Westland Resources Ltd will be salvaging stranded salmonids at 19 locations along the Skeena River. Juvenile salmonids can swim through cracks below the roads (Highway 16) at these locations and rear in isolated waterbodies on the other side of the road. Salmonids become stranded, due to increasing in size during rearing, and are unable to return to the Skeena River to complete their lifecycle. We wish to salvage in unison with seasonal flooding and drought, as to optimize the amount of fish salvaged.Gee minnow traps, dip nets, seine nets and electrofishing (only if necessary) will be used to salvage the areas. Please see the attached PDF with a list of the site locations map. Salmonids will not be held for extended periods as all locations are within close proximity of the release site (Skeena River). Salmonids will be in holding buckets where temperature and oxygen levels are closely monitored. Salmonids will not be contained in the traps for more than 24 hours.
