The Koh-learning in our watersheds program (KLP) is an experiential nature- and place-based program of integrative learning developed in partnership by Dr. Margot Parkes, University of British Columbia and School District 91, Nechako Lakes. It is examining the ecological health of small streams in the Nechako River Basin, particularly within the Vanderhoof and Ft St James areas. SD 91 teachers and students, in conjunction with Mr. Barry Booth, UNBC KLP Research Associate, have been using the Pacific Streamkeepers (PSK) protocols to evaluate small streams. A component of this project is to assess the distribution, and to monitor trends in abundance of juvenile fish in the streams in the region. In addition, sampling of juvenile fish can provide needed baseline information on the distribution of juvenile fish in the Nechako River Basin (NRB) as well as providing data relating to the abundance of juvenile fish in relation to planned and completed restoration projects in the region. Consequently, this project will provide valuable updated information related to fish use for several streams in the NRB. In addition, we are working in close cooperation with Dr. Brent Murray at UNBC on a new phase of an environmental DNA (eDNA) project whereby Dr. Murray is using eDNA as a tool in the assessment of presence, presence/not detected of juvenile salmonids in the NRB. These trapping data provide valuable additional data for Dr. Murrays eDNA project.
