A desktop study to develop and update a monthly water budget for the Salmon River watershed upstream of Falkland was undertaken in response to new information, new legislative requirements for licensing of groundwater use and consideration of environmental flow needs under the Water Sustainability Act, and ongoing water quantity pressures on the Salmon River and associated aquifers. The goals of this study were: (1) to develop an updated monthly water budget for the Salmon River watershed upstream of Falkland, for the purpose of better understanding the quantity of water moving through components of the watershed under long-term normal, wet and dry conditions; (2) use a data-driven approach to inform and refine the conceptual hydrogeological model; (3) identify factors influencing groundwater and surface water availability to improve water management; (4) assess risk to aquatic habitat in the Salmon River using the B.C. Environmental Flow Needs Policy criteria; and (5) conduct a data gap analysis to identify limitations of the report and areas for further data collection or analysis.
This report builds on the work of Bennett (2012) (A Water Budget for the Westwold Valley Aquifer West of Salmon Arm, BC) and focuses on quantifying components of the water budget that are useful for informing water allocation and water management in the study area. The intent of the analysis was to gain a better understating of the relative contribution and interactions of various components of the water budget within the study area, with a focus on terms that are useful for groundwater allocation, and overall water allocation.
