The project addresses the need to restore key reaches of Marion Creek that have been altered through past ditching, channeling, and draining activities aimed at controlling flow for downstream ranching operations. NCC hopes to restore the natural hydrology of Marion Creek and create climate resiliency on the landscape to benefit local populations of Westslope Cutthroat Trout (WCT; Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi) and a diversity of other wildlife species. The project will take specific action to restore habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, bats, and at least 10 species at risk including American Badger (Taxidea taxus), Western Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta pop.2), Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor), and Western Toad (Anaxyrus boreas) (NCC 2021). Constructing a complex of wetlands connected by a restored stream channel associated with Marion Creek will restore natural hydrology and significantly improve critical habitat for wildlife and key ungulate winter range, rangeland, recharge groundwater, address the urgent need to improve resiliency of local wetland ecosystems that are under threat of the impacts of climate change by buffering the seasonal availability of water resources, improving water quality for aquatic species, and by ensuring critical habitat for wetland-dependent species (NCC 2021).
