A GIS based desktop study was conducted to provide a preliminary assessment of the likelihood of hydraulic connections between groundwater resources and surface water in overlying streams within a 60,000 ha study area encompassing the City of Chilliwack. An understanding of hydraulic connections between groundwater and surface water is needed to inform the adjudication of groundwater licence applications, and to assess the potential impacts from groundwater pumping on surface water availability. The likelihood of hydraulic connection was assessed for 859 wells in a study area that contained 30 mapped aquifers (23 unconsolidated and 7 fractured bedrock aquifers). Of the 859 wells assessed, hydraulic connection to streams was inferred for 783 wells. Despite the uncertainties inherent in this preliminary assessment, the study provides a systematic and larger-scale context to inform future studies and authorization of groundwater use in the Chilliwack area.
