A detailed characterization of groundwater conditions and stratigraphy to support aquifer mapping in the Cowichan River watershed, on the north side of the Cowichan River, approximately 8 km east of Lake Cowichan, B.C.

Audience:  Government and Public

A detailed characterization of groundwater conditions and stratigraphy was completed for an unconsolidated aquifer complex found on the north side of Cowichan River, approximately 8 km east of Lake Cowichan, B.C. This assessment was completed to revise aquifer polygon mapping, and to improve understanding of groundwater conditions, including the hydraulic connectivity between the aquifers and adjacent surface water bodies, for the purpose of groundwater allocation decisions in this area. The study area geology was summarized as Quaternary glacio-marine sediments overlying a sequence of glacio-lacustrine and glacio-marine sediments in turn overlying pre-glacial gravel overlying Nanaimo Group sandstone/shale bedrock. Based on geology, water well lithology data cross-sections were developed which helped to recognize two confined sand and gravel aquifers within the Quaternary sediments, one shallow (AQ178) and one deeper (AQ 1287).
