The Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) has been conducting an
evaluation of the footprint impacts (see Appendix 1 for a definition of footprint impacts) of BC Hydro developments within the Columbia Basin by estimating habitat, primary productivity, and fish and wildlife community changes as a result of dam construction. The subsequent operational impacts of the dams are considered a separate issue, dealt
with in the Water Use Planning (WUP) process.

The objective of this report was to summarize burbot population losses and gains, including potential compensation options in the FWCP area (Canadian Columbia River Basin). Specifically, the objective of this report was to:
- Review the historic and present distribution of burbot in the Columbia Basin;
- Summarize life history traits in relation to potential limiting factors and footprint dam impacts;
- Assess the status (increasing, decreasing, stable, unknown) of individual populations or sub-populations of burbot for each dam unit in the FWCP area before and after construction of dams; and
- Provide compensation options, and if possible, estimated costs for populations that have declined.
