Productivity estimates were derived for terrestrial ecosystems within the Columbia Basin dam impacts footprint area using a series of models. Ecosystem mapping was developed for the affected area in a previous project (Ketcheson et al. 2004). The basic site types (site series, non-forested areas, and deciduous leading stands) identified in that project were used as the basic modelling variable for assessing terrestrial productivity.

The primary result of this project consists of a series of databases that summarise terrestrial productivity, timber volume, and carbon storage by ecosystem and successional state (structural stage). The data can be used to determine terrestrial productivity (NPP or NEP) and carbon storage (biomass and dead organic matter) estimates by ecosystem type, reservoir and stream reach, or for the entire footprint area.
Values for each structural stage allow users to calculate estimates over a variety of scenarios including carbon storage and production at the time of flooding, under natural conditions (using the range of natural variability in disturbance for each ecosystem type), or under maximum potential scenarios.
