Along with many specific objectives, the main objective of this study is to evaluate any potential negative cumulative and site specific effects of past and proposed forestry activity on the watersheds hydrology, slope and channel geomorphology, and water quality.

Norrish Creek is located approximately 12 kilometres east of Mission, where it drains
into the north side of the Fraser River at Nicomen Slough (Figure 1). At the Fraser River
the Norrish Creek watershed covers an area of approximately 11,800 hectares. Norrish Creek is used as a principal water supply for the cities of Abbotsford and Mission
through the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), currently providing water to about
>100,000 people . Projected water use shows Norrish Creek providing water to 160,000
FRVD residents. The community water-supply intake is located about 9 km upstream of
the Fraser River, with the area of the community watershed (defined as that area draining
into Norrish Creek or its tributaries upstream of the community water-supply intake)
being about 8,000 hectares. The principal land use in the watershed is forestry activity, with logging dating to at least
the early 1940s. Current forestry activity is by Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (Canfor)
under Forest Licence and Timber Licence, and McMahon Lumber Company (McMahon)
under Timber Sale Licence. The lower watershed contains important fisheries resources, and is utilized for spawning
and rearing by several salmonids species. A hatchery located on the alluvial fan of
Norrish Creek releases juvenile salmonids to the lower watershed each year. A waterfall
located about 400mdownstream of the community water-supply intake prevents
anadromous fish access beyond that point. The community watershed portion of Norrish
Creek is limited to resident fish, predominantly rainbow trout and possibly dolly varden. Norrish Creek has been the focus of watershed planning for more than a decade. An
Integrated Watershed Management Plan (IWMP) was developed by an
agency/stakeholder committee in the late 1980s. As part of their on-going commitment
to forest management in the Norrish Creek watershed, Canfor has contracted to have a
watershed assessment completed for the community watershed portion of watershed, as
per the Operational Planning Regulations of the Forest Practices Code.
