Canadian Forest Products (CanFor) in partnership with the Namgis First Nation ('Namgis) and the International Woodworkers of America (IWA) have been restoring watersheds in the Nimpkish Valley since the inception of the Watershed Restoration Program in 1995. Overview planning, prioritization and prescription studies have led to the deactivation of many forest roads and the construction of numerous instream structures in an attempt to offset and rehabilitate damage caused by forest development. One of the remaining restoration issues - the highest priority in the watershed - is how to address the significant channel changes that have occurred on the Yookwa Creek fan, Sebalhall River and Nimpkish River near Nimpkish Island after floodplain logging in the 1960s and 1970s. Several studies have assessed the conditions of these streams and developed conceptual approaches to address the coarse sediment input of Yookwa Creek, in particular, to Sehalball River. A number of stakeholder meetings have been held over the years to address this issue, the most recent in November 2001, but no firm agreement has been reached on the causes and treatment of the coarse sediment input.
