Trophy regulations were successful in increasing the catch (kill and release) per unit effort and size of fish in comparison with a control lake. The kill rate was, however, only one-third of that on the control lake. Total effort/ha was similar on the two lakes despite a winter closure on the trophy lake. An additional benefit of trophy regulations is that stocking rates can be reduced. In this case, stocking rates on the control lake were three times those on the trophy lake. Anglers on the trophy lake were generally more skilled, but active anglers, as opposed to purist and novice anglers, predominated on both lakes.
