Abstract: In order to understand habitat use and selection by chiselmouth within a single drainage, chiselmouth were intensively sampled throughout the Blackwater drainage. Fifty sites were sampled on the Blackwater and its tributaries during the summer and fall of both 1996 and 1997. Sites ranged from mainstem habitats on the Blackwater, Nazko, Euchiniko, Baezaeko, and Coglistiko, to small headwater streams. Chiselmouth were exclusively collected at mainstem river sites where bankfull width exceeded 10 m. Within these sites, chiselmouth were collected from a range of hydraulic units, including runs, riffles, glides, backwaters and pools with coarse substrate. Adult chiselmouth were typically found in deeper, higher velocity runs and glides with a high proportion of cobble and some boulder substrate, although they were also collected from deeper pools. Juveniles were usually found in slow velocity habitats, typically vegetated backwaters and sidechannels. Squawfish, Peamouth Chub and Redside Shiners were usually collected at the same sites as chiselmouth. Although adults of these species did not appear to be using precisely the same microhabitats, juveniles typically occurred in mixed schools of all four species. Juvenile chiselmouth were consistently rare in the Blackwater, never accounting for more than 5% of the individuals in mixed assemblages. Adults could be locally more abundant and would occur in schools, but never accounted for more than 20% of the fish community at a site. Spawning and overwintering habitats were not successfully established using internal radio transmitters due to high mortality of the five chiselmouth that were radiotagged, and spawning locations in the Blackwater remain unknown. If riverine populations of chiselmouth ...
