Abstract: This document provides guidance for considering and mitigating threats to wildlife and wildlife habitat from industrial development in the North Area (Peace, Omineca and Skeena regions), British Columbia. It provides an overview of the regulatory and policy frameworks, and value-specific guidance. The value-specific guidance section describes the conservation status and management objectives for the value, as well as suggested steps for identifying and mitigating impacts from industrial activities. The B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNR) and the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) recognize the need for consistent and co-coordinated project-level wildlife guidance for assessment and mitigation of priority wildlife species* in the North Area, such as ungulates, grizzly bear, furbearers, small mammals, birds and amphibians. This document provides a compilation of strategies and best management practices for government staff and proponents in order to provide a streamlined, cross-regional context for industrial development with respect to priority wildlife species and their habitats. This document is a living document and will be modified in the future as required to address gaps in strategies and best management practices, incorporate new science and knowledge resulting from effectiveness monitoring of management actions, and reflect new research data. Nothing in this document should be construed as waiving compliance with any applicable statutory or other legal requirement. Proponents are advised that they must comply with all applicable federal, provincial and municipal enactments pertaining to their projects and adhering to this guidance does not supersede those legal requirements. This document provides guidance based on the best available science and best practices literature and is results-based in nature, centering on the professional reliance approach. Proponents are expected to follow these guidelines.
