Abstract: In this analysis the problems associated with the management and use of hardwood and mixedwood forests were explored. The intent was to study aspects of the debate surrounding hardwood and mixedwood management, and to develop research priorities for the southern Interior. The focus was the Interior Cedar Hemlock (ICH) and Interior Douglas-fir (IDF) zones, where hardwoods reach their greatest productivity and are the most easily accessible. The hardwood species investigated were primarily paper birch (Betula papyrifera) and secondarily black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa). The study was restricted to timber management issues.
