Abstract: Competitive interactions between lodgepole pine and plant species in Sitka alder-dominated shrub communities were examined in two studies in the Montane Spruce zone. The first study examined the mean response of 3-year-old planted seedlings to manipulative densities and proximities of Sitka alder. The abundance of Sitka alder and understory plants was systematically varied, and the performance of pine seedlings and the changes in environmental resources and conditions were evaluated. The second study respectively examined competitive interactions among 6- to 10-year-old naturally regenerated lodgepole pine saplings and Sitka alder using a neighborhood approach. Based on the results of this study, recommendations for treating current and backlog sites are made.
