In 1987, Pace Chemicals Ltd. and Forestry Canada entered into a Direct Delivery Forest Resources Development Agreement (FRDA) project (#F-52-42-102) in order to evaluate the herbicide technique "Gel Cap". Gel Cap was designed to control young trees, typically hardwood species, such as red alder and aspen. It is a capsule injection system, consisting of a capsule containing gelled herbicide, and an applicator tool. The capsule is an open-ended plastic cylinder containing 0.36 grams of the active ingredient glyphosate. The capsule is screwed into a tree, thereby exposing the gelled herbicide to the cambial tissues. Four trials were established through B.C. in order to demonstrate and evaluate Gel Cap efficacy and productivity, while comparing it to Hack and Squirt method (H. and S.).
