Abstract: A trial was initiated in the SBS biogeoclimatic zone of British Columbia to investigate the extent and processes of downslope movement of hexazinone, a soil-active, soil-mobile herbicide used in forestry. Three rates and two time periods of application were tested on two soil types near Smithers, B.C. The hexazinone was applied on the top 100 m, and its downslope movement assessed on the lower 40 m by surface and subsurface soil water collected in specially designed troughs located at 7, 15, and 25 m below the last point of application. Hexazinone-sensitive plants, such as rose and aspen, were also used to indicate the extent of downslope movement. Results of residue analysis suggest that the fall application on both sites resulted in greater downslope movement and did the spring application.
