The Northern Wetbelt Silvicultural Systems Project is an established, long-term study designed to investigate the ecological and silvicultural outcomes of different silvicultural systems (including clearcut and partial cut harvest methods and uncut controls) in wet Interior cedar-hemlock and subalpine spruce-fir forests. Seven silvicultural systems study areas have been established in the mountains of east-central British Columbia, specifically in Wet and Very Wet ICH and ESSF subzones. The project includes older installations and a recently-established set of replicated ICH and ESSF trials. Accomplishments for 2003/04 include: (1) 2003 field-season data collection and technical reporting relating to survival and growth of planted regeneration, windthrow trends across the range of sites, and baseline climate monitoring; (2) A comprehensive report on conservation and management of inland rainforests (wetbelt ICH forests) including silvicultural systems, being readied for peer-review; and (3) improvements and upgrades to the central Access database repository for long-term scientific data for this project, and (4) improvements to the UNBC Northern Wetbelt research website, including a searchable database option and upgrades for NRIN (Natural Resource Information Management) compatibility.
