Abstract: A trial was designed to monitor the ingress and mortality of high stand density regeneration occurring after the 2003 wildfires on three sites on Tree Farm License 15 in the south Okanagan area of British Columbia. The trial design was six randomly located sample points in each of three cutblocks that were salvage harvested in early 2004. Each sample was a cluster of four contiguous 8 x 8 m plots each containing four 1 x 1 m subplots. The idea is that after the trees grow and increase in size, measurements can be expanded to the 8 x 8 m plots from the smaller subplots. The trial is also designed so that some samples (or individual plots) can be randomly selected to include in operational juvenile spacing treatments in these blocks in the future. Tree measurements were done in the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006. Most plots in sites 1 and 2 were completed in the fall 2005 with remaining measurement and all of site 3 completed in the spring of 2006. Measurements showed an average stand density of about 256,000 trees/ha on site 1, 440,000/ha on site 2, and 143,000/ha on site 3. Site 1 was almost pure Fd, site 2 was a Lw?Fd mix, and site 3 was almost pure Pl. The variability in stand density increased as the area of measurement decreased from sites to samples to plots and subplots. For example, sample averages ranged up to about 600,000/ha in site 1, 750,000/ha in site 2, and 380,000/ha on site 3. Subplot averages ranged up to 1,700,000/ha on site 1, 2,200,000/ha on site 2, and 750,000/ha on site 3. The intent is that these plots will be re-measured in 2007, 2009, and possibly beyond. Operational juvenile spacing may be used in these blocks around 2009, at which time this trial can be adapted to compare spaced and unspaced portions of these high density blocks. J.S.
