Old-growth specklebelly lichen (Pseudocyphellaria rainierensis) is found on the west coast of Canada and the U.S. from Oregon to southeast Alaska. Current known locations are primarily associated with late-seral or old-growth forests. Old-growth specklebelly (OGS) lichen is currently on Schedule 3 (Special Concern) of the Species at Risk Act (SARA) with a re-assessment expected by April 2010. Collections in recent years on northern Vancouver Island (NVI) suggested that this epiphytic lichen may be more common than previously thought in this portion of its range, with important implications for forest management. This report presents findings from surveys completed in 2008 and 2009 on NVI and the adjacent mainland coast of British Columbia.
The objectives of this project were to obtain baseline data on the relative abundance and distribution of OGS lichen within several of Western Forest Products? TFLs and adjacent parks in order to provide improved data for COSEWIC evaluation and forest management strategies. This report presents the combined results of field surveys in 2008 (TFLs, 19) and 2009 (TFLs 25, 39, 44).
