Development and Testing of Site-Series Grouping Scenario?s for Operational Management of Ecosystem Representation Warttig, Warren

Abstract: The purpose of this project is to simplify current ecosystem representation methods, moving away from a standard site-series representation to a defensive method that reduces operational complexity while maintaining representation. For this project, six different scenarios were assessed for their potential management applicability and their potential relative effects on timber supply in 14 Landscape units in the South Central Coast area. The different scenarios included: (1) site series control (1:20,000 TEM information), (2) Banner and MacKinnon (November 2009) site series groups, (3) Banner and MacKinnon/Green (November 2009) site series groups, (4) site associations, (5) site association groups, and (6) site series surrogates. The site series grouping scenarios (2 and 3), resulted in similar outcomes across all landscape units. There was little difference in the area of accessible old forest depending on which site series grouping method is used. The site association scenarios (4 and 5) showed consistently lower surplus and deficit values than the site series-based approaches for several LU?s including Estero, Fulmore, Gilford, and Gray. The deficit/surplus values are lower with site associations for these landscape units because the remaining old forest, which tends to be concentrated in the vm2, is pooled across both the vm1 and vm2 for RONV calculations. Eight of the landscape units, Ahta, Franklin, Huaskin, Johnston, Knight East, Lower Klinaklini, Lull-Sallie, and Sim showed no or very little change of surplus old seral areas between any of the scenarios. Site series surrogates were assessed using the same analysis as the site series grouping scenarios to determine how effectively the RONV targets were met. Significantly larger surplus and deficit areas in all landscape units were found as compared to any of the site series groups.
