Five-Year Response of Douglas-fir to Fertilization in the Sayward Forest, Vancouver Island BC Forest Service - Research Division

Abstract: In 1966, Cominco Limited, in co-operation with the Research Division of the B.C. Forest Service, established a series of plots in low elevation Douglas-fir plantations in the Sayward Forest near Campbell River on Vancouver Island. This was a trial, one objective of which was to demonstrate possible growth responses to applications of urea and other nutrients. Five experimental blocks were established, each block representing a different soil type and each consisting of a systematic layout of 20 plots. Different levels of urea ranging from 112 to 448 kg/ha were applied to the plots in the fall of 1966. At the 224 kg/ha level certain nutrients were added to the application: iammonium and maqnesium sulphate, potassium and magnesium nitrate, and micronutrients. All the trees in the sample plots with a diameter above a standard limit were measured in 1966 and again in 1971. Analysis of the results shows that an increased level of urea application resulted in greater basal area growth response up to the maximum application level except in one block where the greatest response was found at the 224 N kg/ha level. In general, the addition of nutrients to the application made no difference to the growth response. Details of this trial may be obtained by writing to the Information Division, B.C. Forest Service, Legislative Buildings, Victoria, B.C. V8V 1X5, for Research Note No. 77 "Five-Year Growth Response of Douqlas-fir to fertilization in the Sayward Forest, Vancouver Island".
