Abstract: All caribou in British Columbia belong to the same subspecies, but the Mountain Caribou ecotype of south-eastern and east-central BC is distinctive in habitat use, behaviour, and movement patterns. The Mountain Caribou's range corresponds closely to the distribution of the Interior Wetbelt, and its distinctive attributes are related to the high snowfall and mountainous topography that characterize the area. During winter, Mountain Caribou use extensive areas of mature forest and feed largely on arboreal lichens. Because of this pattern of habitat use, forest harvesting in Mountain Caribou range is a major management concern.
