In March 2003 a Watershed-based Fish Sustainability Plan was completed for six watersheds in the Southwest Seymour Inlet Area. That plan was based on the collection and analysis of historical data, the collection of information from organizations and companies that had an interest in the area, and in-field assessments of the priority watersheds identified. Recommendations for the sustainability of fish populations within each watershed were included in that report and helped form the basis upon which further field examination was carried out. Two watersheds were selected to be examined more closely and have recommended rehabilitative works carried out. These were Lower Brown Creek and Coho Creek. As was required preliminary survey works were conducted and a specific work plan was drawn up. The restoration objectives of the stream modification carried out on Lower Brown Creek included: ? Increase the access of salmonids into the upper reaches of the watershed; ? Prevent further habitat degradation from occurring in the form of lateral bank erosion; ? Maintain the significant pool habitat above the debris accumulation; ? Improve spawning habitat within the lower reach of the stream. The proposed restoration activities to meet these objectives were to: ? Remove a large amount of collected wood debris from the jammed areas to prevent backwatering; ? Allow the stream to flow freely through the jammed area, with the thalweg re-established; ? Install a sill log structure on the upstream side of the jam before removing woody material to ensure adequate pool depth upstream; ? Provide cover and bank protection by constructing LWD structures in the most highly impacted areas; ? Add spawning size gravel to the stream channel in areas where the substrate was covered by a layer of organics and mud. The restoration objectives of the stream modification carried out on Coho Creek included: ? Increase the access to the upper stream reaches for salmonids; ? Prevent further habitat degradation from occurring in the form of lateral bank erosion; ? Add spawning size gravel to the stream channel in areas where the substrate was covered by a layer of organics and mud. The proposed restoration activities to meet these objectives were to: ? Remove the woody debris (mostly introduced shake block material) blocking fish access to a degree where stream flow can be maintained and fish access can occur unobstructed.
