Abstract: Quality information is essential for sustainable management of mixedwood stands in the Sub-Boreal Spruce Zone. Currently, little is known regarding optimal levels of deciduous broadleaf species required to maintain or increase productivity while reducing the incidence of damaging pests. Future, traditional, and value added wood markets will necessitate the utilization of deciduous species. Previous studies have shown that mixed woods improve forest health by decreasing pest damage. However, the requisite threshold density of deciduous cover needed to achieve this is unknown. By studying the management of mixed woods, particularity birch, in the SBS there will be enhancements in biodiversity and to the value added sector Nicole Balliet, Sue Nykoluk, Tony Letchford.
