Earlier results show little evidence of provenances being 'best adapted' to their original location. This contrasts with previous studies indicating Douglas-fir was locally adapted in the Pacific Northwest and therefore seed transfer should be limited. In theory, non-local seed will encounter problems over longer periods as stresses accumulate from climatic events. Study trees are now of harvest age and therefore the growth information obtained from this trial will allow us to test this theory and to make juvenile/mature age correlations for growth. It's important for BC's tree improvement programs to know if trees performing well early will continue to be the best at rotation. Craig Newton.
