Abstract: In the spring of 2000, 319 small openings along Spirit Creek and Big Tree Creek were planted to four species with most trees being protected from browsing by browse protection cones. The cones were maintained in May 2001, followed by brushing in June of the same year. In March 2003 browse cones were removed upstream from the Spirit Creek Bridge and were maintained downstream. Brushing took place at the end of June to release the trees from primarily salmonberry. I surveyed the riparian planting on the 24th of March 2004 to determine effectiveness of the treatments in 2003 and to recommend possible follow up action. Prior to inspection I randomly selected 10 clusters for sampling. The brushing treatment in June and July 2003 was effective; browse damage remains serious for western red cedar, with no relief in sight. recommendations: 2004 - no treatments planned. 2005 - review need for 2005 brushing prior to end of March 2005.
