Monitoring silvicultural treatment of riparian zone adjacent to Block 579-16 Carson, Brian

Abstract: Heavy alder recruitment into the main channel of Lang Creek does not have the long term value of conifer species. The trials conducted by Weyerhaeuser were performed to enhance the riparian zone of the creek. This report covers the monitoring visit made to the trial site on July 31, 2003, water temperature data upstream and downstream of the trials during the critical high temperature period and available upstream and downstream turbidity data. Recommendations: Summer monitoring should be carried out in 2004 as per original design of program. There is a possibility that released cedars within the plots may begin to put on considerable diameter growth and so Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) should be measured for marked trees within plots 1 and 2. Brush growth will be significant this summer and effect of this brush in tree release and planted seedling growth should be considered. Close attention should be paid to any increase in windfalls and changes to large woody debris loading of Lang Creek Channel.
