In December 2003 the provincial government of British Columbia enacted the Forest and Ranges Practices Act (FRPA) to replace the 1995 Forest Practices Code Act (the Code). Regulation of forest practices under the Code has been highly prescriptive. FRPA is a move to results-based forest management with government setting management objectives and forest companies developing strategies or methodologies to meet the objectives. In response, Western Forest Products initiated a project on Tree Farm Licence 6 (2,300 km2) on northern Vancouver Island to inventory road stability and erosion hazards, sediment delivery potential from roads, landslide occurrence, stream channel types, riparian conditions, and previously completed restoration work across the entire TFL. The use of GIS was maximized both to allow the inventories to be compiled most cost effectively and to integrate these data with other forest inventory data. This integrated inventory information will allow prioritization of watershed restoration, development of indicators, and development of watershed management strategies across the TFL. Specific watershed strategies can be developed for unique conditions.
