Abstract: Monitoring the movements of mountain goats among isolated non-alpine features to determine movement patterns and identify critical habitat features such as mineral licks, natal areas and winter use areas. In addition to the monitoring of the movements of mountain goats, three new components have been added to this project. These are: GPS Collar Recovery: Recovery of seven GPS collars with remote radio and timer releases scheduled for release between October 2003 and January 2004. Upon recovery, the data from the collars will be downloaded and entered into an Access database for analysis. Genetic Analysis: Genetic material recovered in early 2003 will be sent to a lab for analysis. It is hoped that analysis will show relationships between animal groups on the different study sites and hopefully indicate dispersal movements across the landscape. An analysis of the amount of interaction between the different populations will also be completed. Preliminary analysis of GPS and VHF collar locations will be conducted based on seasonal home range estimates using the kernel method for different seasons and individuals. These home ranges will be compared to habitat attributes available from digital data sources. A summary of the habitat attributes for each season and individual will be prepared in both tabular and graphic formats.
