Abstract: The FORGE (FORest Growth Engine) developed by Weyerhaeuser BC Coastal Group is an exploratory model designed to examine the effects of variable retention on the growth of the remaining and future trees. During 2004-2005 this component of the model was improved by examining suppression and stochastic mortality compared to trends observable in Weyerhaeuser BC Coastal Group?s data and from the literature. Suppression mortality comprises a regular predictable progression of mortality caused by overtopping of dominant trees while stochastic mortality refers to less predictable events such as those caused by windthrow and disease. The intent is to produce yearly or periodic output of dead trees by diameter class that is in turn fed into another model that tracks snags and coarse woody debris. The model should be able to simulate a wide range of variable retention - group, dispersed and mixed. by N.J. Smith
